Indonesian Great White Shark

Dateline 17th January 2015.

In mid 2014, Indonesian researchers, Fahmi and Dharmadi, published the first record of a great white in Indonesian waters. On July 31 2013 a large great white was caught by longliners 11 kms off Dompu, West Nusa Tenggara (08\'51\'S - 118\' 18\'E). The shark was harpooned as it followed the line in when it was being retrieved.

The very large male specimen (approx. 6.5m) was cut into five pieces before being landed at Tanjung Luar market from three boats. The dorsal fin measured 850cms from base to apex and the pectoral fins were 1150 mm long. The shark was sold for 11 million rupees the day it was landed and processed the same day.

It is very unfortunately that the first record of a white shark in Indonesian waters should be of such a large animal and that it is dead.
