Iccat Rules To Protect Atlantic Sharks

Dateline 29th November 2011.

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) which ostensibly is responsible for the conservation of tuna and tuna like species in the Adriatic, has ruled that scalloped, smooth, great hammerheads and oceanic whitetip sharks can no longer be targeted by fisheries or kept if caught.

The porbeagle was not protected and is still targeted by Canadian fisheries, although the EU has declared it a zero take species in early 2010.
