South Africa Shark Management

Dateline 16th May 2014.

The Society is in regular touch with Honorary Life Member Chris Fallows who recently asked SCS for its views on shark management issues. The following statement has been issued to Chris explaining our position.

"Shark management can mean a lot of things. If it means shark fisheries these should only be operated based on proven sustainability. If it means coastal culling to protect recreational water users then a host of complications arise when endangered species become the targets of culling.

There can be no justification for killing endangered species in their natural habitat to provide protection for invading humans. The Society urges governments to implement protective barrier systems instead of culling, and for barrier systems to be passive i.e. no hooks or catch nets purely physical barriers. There are many such options and concerned governments could deploy resources to develop new and better systems.”
